How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a'89 Ford truck.?

The problem started out with not having tail lights and interior dash lights. The head lights were still working. The brake lights still work. I was told by an experienced mechanic of many years that the problem could be the head light switch. Any ideas anyone? I would appreciate them! How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a%26039;89 Ford truck.?
Those don't have the release buttons on the back of the switch. The knobs are held on by a triangular spring clip. Look around the rear of the knob and you should see a small cu-out area. Use a hooked tool to release the clip while pulling off the knob. The ALLDATA instructions for the rest of the job is below. Look real hard at the wiring connections for any signs of overheating or melted plastic. You may need to replace the connector.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

Remove knobs from headlight switch, windshield wiper switch and fog light switch (if equipped). Use a suitable hook tool to release each knob lock tab.

Remove steering column shroud, then the cluster finish panel assembly, Fig. 6.

Remove switch attaching nut, Fig. 6.

Disconnect electrical connector from switch and remove switch from vehicle.

Reverse procedure to install. How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a%26039;89 Ford truck.?
real hard take it to some person that can do itHow hard is it to change out a head light switch in a%26039;89 Ford truck.?
hey it aint bad, just watch the pull knob, it has a release on the backside and if you hose it or strip the plastic, it'll rattle and never stay on. i think you just push the wedge in and pull the knob off. when you have it off, ive always rebent the keeper so it would grip tight. its not fun with your head under the dash. if you drop the 4 bolts on the steering column, you can move it sideways. then id pull the seat, and lay on my back. this is how i got the pawl and quadrant down to 2 hrs for a 5.0.How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a%26039;89 Ford truck.?
Yes it is definatley your headlight switch. If your head light switch is mounted on your dash......no problem a quick 15-20 minute job whick I think you have. If you have your light switch on the steering column with a lever like a turn signal. Your looking at about an hours work with the correct special tools. Don't try it yourself if it is in the steering column. Good luck. How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a%26039;89 Ford truck.?
Fords are the worst piece of crap vehicles ever. I had a headlight problem on an 86 Mustang and an 89 Aerostar. Two friends of mine had a similar problem on a Thunderbird and on an Escort.

I replaced the switch on the Mustang and the wiring harness on the Aerostar. I'm not a mechanic and I don't know much about cars, but I looked over the situation and did both jobs myself. The wiring harness would have been a very expensive job had it not been for my being able to find one at a junkyard. Good luck and I'll NEVER buy another Ford. How hard is it to change out a head light switch in a%26039;89 Ford truck.?
Its Pretty easy... you need to get to where you can place your hand behind the dash where the switch is located on the switch there is a spring loaded button...

depressing it while gently pushing back and forth slighlty on the knob (sometimes rotating the knob like you're turnin op or down the lights also will disengage it try both one will work)

you pull to turn the lights on should cause this knob with the actuator rod attached to pull loose from the switch...

next at the location the rod came out of there is a collar (usually Chromed) with 3 -4 notches in it this must be rotated counter clock wise about 6 turns or so until the switch comes free from the dash..

now unplug old switch from harness and plug in the new one... Place new switch upto the hole start the collar (retainer) by rotating it clockwise this time...

be sure to align up the locator notch in dash with the locator tab on switch now tighten collar until tight....

take actuator rod and place into the hole and push straight forward till you feel it start to bottom then push just a little more ...

you should feel and hear a slight click as the retainer sets on the grooved area at the tip of the rod...

try pulling the knob out to see if lights work... Lights work!!

Congratulations you just changed your first headlight switch and saved yourself at least $12-15 to pay a mechanic...

How do you fight off red traffic light camera ticket,,,,I was skeptic about the light change?

then I felt the camera flash the same time I applied the brake right at the intersection during the passing.... what is my chance to get the ticket/ Would the cop look at the photo analyz it before issue ticket? How do you fight off red traffic light camera ticket,,,,I was skeptic about the light change?
Just because a picture was taken does not mean you will receive a ticket - the picture will be reviewed and they may decide that they cannot prove there was any violation. In addition, there is one %26quot;get out of jail free card%26quot; - if you had a passenger in your vehicle, they cannot issue a ticket (as it is a violation of privacy for them to send you a picture of anybody but yourself). Because of the privacy issue, they DO review all pictures before issuing a ticket. Because every single picture is reviewed, if you do receive a ticket it's pretty darn hard to get out of.

If you are sent a ticket and still feel that you are innoecent, you are allowed to contest the ticket in court. At the courthouse, they will show you the full video of the event (from which the pictures you receive in the mail were taken), at which point you will be able to make a decision to go through with the hearing or not. Because of all the documentation they have, you will find the case nearly impossible to win. Be careful: If you contest the ticket and lose, you may find your penalty even worse than if you never contested at all. (For example, in California - if you contest the ticket and lose, you can no longer go to traffic school to get rid of the points on your license.)

If you have doubts though, you may as well go the courthouse to check the rest of the documentation yourself - and then with that information, decide whether you would like to go through with contesting the ticket.

Good luck! How do you fight off red traffic light camera ticket,,,,I was skeptic about the light change?
i dnt think they analyze it or nething..if they captured a pictyre of you crossing on red light. u will most prolly get the ticket, unless u get lucky by any chance!!

hopefully u don get a ticket though :o)How do you fight off red traffic light camera ticket,,,,I was skeptic about the light change?
If it flashed you were proabably in the wrong. Your supposed to start braking on the amber or yellow light. Not the red

I have a 89 buick regal custom and brake lights dont work...?

The blinkers work on both sides but i have no hazards or brake lights! I changed the brake light switch and still nothing. Could it be the turn signal switch and how would i be able to test it before i take it apart. Bulbs are good! The same bulb is used for brake and parking lights(which work). please help!!!!I have a 89 buick regal custom and brake lights dont work...?
In GM sedans the turn signal switch sometimes controls the brake lights. I replaced one in a 98 Monte Carlo with a similar problem. I can only speak of this one experience but... you will need a wiring diagram to find the correct wires to test, available in a HAYNES repair manual or from a dealer. The switch I replaced went from the top of the steering column down through the center and connected under the dash. Had to disassemble most of the column to get it out. Would need to clearify with a diagram but I think the turn signal switch wiring may supply power to or get a signal from the brake light switch. I recall similar issues with all lights in the rear. It didn't really make any sense. Good Luck!I have a 89 buick regal custom and brake lights dont work...?
I do not see that you checked the fuses, Could be as simple as that!I have a 89 buick regal custom and brake lights dont work...?
If it's not the fuse as mentioned above, it may be the relay behind the dash kind of dangling above the fuse box.

(round silver thing)

Or, the flasher in the fuse box?I have a 89 buick regal custom and brake lights dont work...?
I will have to say you are wrong about the same bulb for parking light and brake. Yes it is a single bulb, but it has 2 elements inside, 1 for lights and one for brake(being the brighter light). I would check that first, one of the elements might be broken. Than I would check the fuse next. Make sure when you changed the brake light switch that you have it installed correctly. If you have a test light, find the wire in the rear for the brake lights. Test to see if you have power going to the light by having a friend step on the brakes while you touch the socket with the test light. If you do than it would be a bulb, if you don't you will have to work your way back to the switch. Good Luck.I have a 89 buick regal custom and brake lights dont work...?
If that's a %26quot;W%26quot; body, they had problems with the brake light switches and turn signal switches.

  • How do u change or install the brake lights of a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban?

Can u tell how to. OR tell me a website where I can find this information. How do u change or install the brake lights of a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban?
easy...open the hath or barn doors in the back..there are 2 bolts i believe they are 10mm make sure you use a magnetic socket they get lost very easily...take it out and pop the lights out and then take out the circut board then change the bulbs you need out...put the lense back in and bolt them back up doneHow do u change or install the brake lights of a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban?
Open the back doors and there should be 2 screws (I think). then the lense will come loose with some wiggling. How do u change or install the brake lights of a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban?
You will need to open the back doors to get to the screws that hold the lights in place. The panel that has the door hinges on it will also have the two screws that hold the light in place ,just remove the two screws ,then wiggle the light until it come 's free so you can get to the back side of the light.. now you will need to remove the black plastic cover in order to get to the light bulbs, i believe there three screws holding it in place. Now that you have replaced the burnt out bulb/or bulbs you will need to put the left side of the light in first then the side on the light with the screw holds in it next so it pops back into place ,then replace the screws.

I had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?

from the shop yesterday and the brake light came on the dashboard, he did something and went off. Today I was on my way to work when the light came on again, what should i do, or how can i fix this?I had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?
you reset it with a computer, take it back and make him fix it,free.

if your car has anti-lock brakes and he didn't open the bleeders on the calipers when he compressed them, that forced the fluid up to the ABS control and may have caused damage.

or just check the fluid level and tap on the side of the resevor, the float may be stuckI had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?
what kind of car is it and if its a newer model there is a sensor on the brake caliper that needs to be reset through the computer of the car so take the car back to the mechanicI had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?
take it back he didnt reset it right,I had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?
bring the car back and have him clear the computer of the break fault ... you need to learn some about mechanics ... how many wheels did he do ... you should do a pair not one ....you do 2 or all 4 ... doing just one wheel will make the brakes stop un evenly ... you are talking about disk brakes ... a lot of cars have front discs and rear drum brakes .. they work and are repaired very differently ... Find out more about your car and the repairs will be easier and cheaper ... A mechanic who senses you know about cars will not try to rip you off selling you stuff you do not need ....

Sounds like you have a bad ground at the rear lamp cluster. I'm not sure how your lamp unit will ground. In my TJ Wrangler it is grounded by the mounting bolts. Your's could be with a ground wire though. Make sure the is no corrosion in the actual bulb socket too.

When I use the left turn signal, I get a rapid flash. The front signal works, but tha rear and left rear brake light does not. I went to Pep Boys and bought replacement bulbs, but the heck if I can figure out how to get the lense cover off so I can replace the blown bulb.

How do I Change a 2000 Jetta Brake Fluid?

My Brake Light keeps blinking on an off, when I'm driving.

I believe I need to change my brake fluid. I opened the hood to change it and took the top off but its kinda full. The Fluid in there is also very black.

What should I do from here? should I use something to take the old fluid out then refill it?How do I Change a 2000 Jetta Brake Fluid?
it will take 2 people to drain the brake fluid. you need to raise the rear of the car up, have someone pump the brake pedal a couple of times then hold it down while the other person opens the bleeder valve. after the fluid squirts out, continue to hold down on the brake pedal until the valve is closed. repeat this process on both the rear bleeder valves 8-10 times each. make sure that you keep an eye on the fluid level in the master cylinder. do not let it go empty. after the fluid is almost gone from the master cylinder, fill it back up to the full mark and repeat the process again. this should get almost all of the old fluid out of the brake lines. fill again and you should be ready. make sure the float in the master cylinder moves freely up and down.

Do it yourself. I don't know about ur car but with most all you have to do is look around and you will be able to figure it out. If there are screws on the outside of the tail light remove them. If none there go into the trunk and look for some wing nuts. You may have to pull loose some cloth cover, which is usually held on by Velcro to get to the nuts or screws. (If you're lucky you may find inside the trunk behind the tail light to be the wires that go into a socket thingy that you just twist and it will pull out with the bulb on it.) To remove most bulbs you push in on it and turn it. Look first and you should see two brass nipples on the bulb that hold it in the socket. Once you remove the bulb look at the filaments in it. Hold it up to a light source. If they are not broken you may just need to clean the connections. You can do this with a pencil eraser. Just rub it on the connections real good. Plug back in and check it. If you need a new bulb the number for it will be on the light itself or the metal part of it. Most brake lights have a double filament in them, that's what makes them brighter when you push your brake. It's pretty simple to do. Give it a try. You can't really hurt anything by trying. How do you change a driver%26039;s side rear brake light ?

Go to the auto parts store and buy the correct corresponding bulb. You will need to get at the back of the housing from inside the trunk. Most of the time you will need to pull out some of the inner lining. If you can see the back of the bulb after pulling back the trunk lining, then twist the housing counter clockwise to pull it out. Remove the old bulb. Make sure on the new bulb that you dont get finger prints or oil on it. It can result in premature burnout. Use a towel of some sort to put the new bulb in.

    I have a 1968 mustang.

the emergency light, signal light, and driving lights are working fine except for the driver's side brake light.

I've tried to change the light bulb but it still doesn't work.

How can I fix this problem? The driver%26039;s side brake light doesn%26039;t work?
Perhaps the fuse? Im not 100% sure if it could be the fuse as it is only one light that's out. If not than i reckon it may be the resistor.

Good Luck! The driver%26039;s side brake light doesn%26039;t work?
That's really weird, because it shares the same circuit as the flashers and turns, I'd almost be willing to bet it's an under dash problem, from switch to circuit, how you fix it I'm not sure, I have a bunch of nifty diagnostic tools to find the problem myself. The driver%26039;s side brake light doesn%26039;t work?
The odd part is, that can really only be a light bulb issue. my suggestion to you is to get a multimeter, and check for power at the bulb assembly (you should get around 12V DC power) and if you get power,(make sure someone has your brakes depressed) then it is a faulty ground with your bulb assembly. Clean out the insides really well or replace if possible. If you dont get power at the assembly, then you are unfortunatly going to have to chase the wire using the multimeter to find the point where there is a possible open in your lines. Im not sure of Ford wiring color schemes, but the running lights, brake lights, and turn lights should all be a different color. Good luck! The driver%26039;s side brake light doesn%26039;t work?
check the contact with a volt meter, if getting juice when you step on the brake then wiring is OK, but may not be getting contact to bulb, also check ground for this bulb contact, if no juice when you step on brake. The driver%26039;s side brake light doesn%26039;t work?

  • How to change a rear stop/brake light on a 2002 bonneville?

Logic says that if there's no access hole under it in the trunk then you'll have to crawl in the backseat and figure out the trick to taking the top lens assembly off. Start prying around with a small screwdriver and see what might pop off.

%26quot;One place where you will run into the most problems is the Center Mount Stop Light (CMSL). Most are mounted inside the car on the rear deck lid. Removing these can be a problem. Brake light on 1983 dodge power ram 150?

I have a red brake light on i just had my rear brakes changed but the light is still on what makes that light go on? i cant seem to find anything around the drum or brake shoes wear would the sensor be or what would set it off how can i fix this?Brake light on 1983 dodge power ram 150?
sensor is usually on the master cylinder and is telling you you have low fluid check thatBrake light on 1983 dodge power ram 150?
An '83 Ram PU isn't going to have a low fluid level warning light. That's just the normal brake warning light, which is triggered by a sensor in your proportioning valve (a little metal block that the 2 lines from the master go into, and then 3-4 lines come out to the wheels, just below the master). It shows that there is some sort of an imbalance in pressure between the 2 brake circuits. A lot of times it will be on after a brake job because the wheel cylinders got pushed back in to make room for the new shoes. It will usually go out after you press the brake pedal a few times. If not, it could be that the proportioning valve needs to be reset, or the wheel cylinders started leaking when they were pushed in. Normally, it will come on if you have a fluid leak, air in the lines, or a bad master cylinder plunger.

This is an interesting one. Normally the big question is how to reset the service indicator.

Looks like you may need to get a reset from your dealer this time. Since you're going anyway...

The steps listed below is strictly a %26quot;trial and error%26quot; method. No guarantees it will work.

    Option 1:

Try this... with the key off, PRESS AND HOLD your trip/reset button on the dash. Turn the key ON, then release the button. Your dash will go into test mode. Press and hold again. You MAY or MAY NOT see other options in the display... if you do, there may be a reset option in there.

    Option 2:

with the key in the %26quot;On%26quot; position, open your brake reservoir cap. This will trip the %26quot;low brake fluid%26quot; warning. Then close it back after a few seconds. Turn the key off for a few seconds and turn it back on.

If this doesn't work, time to head to the dealer...Does anyone know how to reset brake fluid light in1998 e39 bmw?
The brake fluid light that will come on will just say %26quot;ABS%26quot;. The clock symbol youre talking about, i believe is the brake lining light, which is your brake pads. Bring it somewhere, or if you are mechanically inclined, check the front left and right rear brake pads, as this is where the brake pad sensors are. Once they are changed the light will go out after leaving the key in the on position for about 30 seconds, sometimes more.

I'd suggest doing this asap as the light goes on when there is about 3mm of pad left, and this will only last you about 1500-2000 miles(and will ruin your rotor and thats extra $ you gotta spend of they are still good!).Does anyone know how to reset brake fluid light in1998 e39 bmw?
This usually comes on because the brake pads have worn down, and the amount of pad that is worn off is made up by the brake pads moving in farther. This space is then made up by more brake fluid. Check the brake fluid level - I'll bet it is low. You can either add more brake fluid - or - put new brake pads on. If you just add brake fluid, becareful when you do replace the pads. You have to press the cylinder back into the caliper in order to get the new pads on. If you added fluid, this will cause the resevoir to be too full, or may even overflow and spill. If you put new pads on without adding fluid, the level should raise up to the MAX level indicator again.

Remember to replace the brake fluid every 2 years -Does anyone know how to reset brake fluid light in1998 e39 bmw?
Try turning the ignition key to the %26quot;on%26quot; position and leave it there for about 2 minutes. Turn to %26quot;off%26quot; and then start the engine and see if the light is out.Does anyone know how to reset brake fluid light in1998 e39 bmw?

I saw 2 thumb screws in trunk, took those off, but can't get brake lense off. Is this the right thing to do?How do I change the rear turn signal/brake light bulb in a 1998 Monte Carlo?
There are three wing nuts that need to be removed to take the taillight out:

    1. Remove the visible plastic wing nut retaining the tail lamp.

    2. Pull back the corner of the rear compartment trim panel to access the remaining plastic wing nuts.

    3. Apply light pressure to the tail lamp lens to retain the lamp in position during removal of the remaining plastic wing nut retainers.

    4. Remove the remaining plastic wing nuts retaining the tail lamp.

    5. Carefully remove the tail lamp assembly from the rear body panel and support the tail lamp assembly.

    6. Rotate each lamp socket counterclockwise to release and remove from the tail lamp housing assembly. How do I change the rear turn signal/brake light bulb in a 1998 Monte Carlo?
Keep going. I think there are either 3 or 4 of those wing nuts inside the trunk that hold the tail light onto the body. Take all off and the lamp will almost fall off. Then either remove the socket or take the screws out and get at the bulbs. How do I change the rear turn signal/brake light bulb in a 1998 Monte Carlo?
either you twist the wiring outlet or remove screw so if one is looking at lense from outside and see no screw then try twisting the wiring inside

it probably has those plastic clips helping hold it it. if you can get a screwdriver in use it to work the clips out. i worked at a ford dealership and when i had to replace lights i would always get new clips cause its just easier to rip them out and replace with new ones. but make sure you can do that first( get parts first). How do you change the brake light in an 05 toyta sienna?
    Buy the replacement.

From the inside there are plastic parts. Use a screw driver to remove some parts, but most new vehicles have compartments where you can unsnap. It's pretty simple after you see the back of the light.

I can't believe I'm asking this, but how in the heck do I change my brake light in my 91 Jeep Cherokee? I opened up the rear door, and can not see anywhere to access the bulbs. Thanks!Brake light out on 91 Jeep Cherokee?
Yess you are .... You need to take the lens itself off to get at the bulbs ... On my 89 that i had i think it was just two star screws ... Look closely at the lens to find the screws ... You will need to buy the right star screwdriver at any auto parts store... they should be able to tell you what size it is ... Your going to pull the entire lens out of where it sits and the wires are attached to it so be careful .... Just go nice and easy when you pull them out and you should be fine.... The bulb sockets are the kind that you twist to get out .... You should be able to do the whole thing at the auto parts store and that way you can get the right bulbs..... Good Luck ; )Brake light out on 91 Jeep Cherokee?

Sounds like Oklatom is giving you the right instructions for removing %26amp; replacing the bulbs; however, if you are still getting a fast light on the inside, it is indicating that you still have a light burned out. Double check the bulbs and ensure that you didn't mess up the filament when you installed them. Also, you may actually have a front turn signal light out and this is creating the fast blinking light when you turn.If you have a chevy cavalier, do u know how to change the brake lights?
The fast blinking is an indicator that you have a burned out bulb. It will blink quicker than usual regardless if it is a front or rear bulb. Hope that helped!

How do I change the centre (high) brake light on a Ford Fiesta Mk6 (2005)?

The Ford manual specifies that you should %26quot;remove the 2 grommets%26quot; (on the inside top edge of the boot hatch), then release some kind of clip inside the now-exposed holes using a screwdriver. No matter how hard I try, I can't find ANYTHING to unscrew or unclip inside either of those holes! How do I change the centre (high) brake light on a Ford Fiesta Mk6 (2005)?
Shine a light up into the holes to see how the release clip may work. Here's the general instructions (below). You may have to use force and know where to apply the force to snap the stoplight plastic housing off. Maybe the dealer would give you a clue knowing you bought your car there!

How did you check the fuse? You looked at it appeared good? Often times fuses will blow and still look good.

Get out your 12 volt test light. Clip the alligator clip to a good ground. Probe one side of the fuse. Did it light? Now the other. Did it light? If both sides do not light, the fuse is bad, change it.

Assuming the fuse is good, make sure voltage is getting to the brake light switch. then make sure it is getting through when the brake is depressed. Sometime the switch will stick and not come on.
