Ok, I still can't solve my brake lights problem!!!?

I checked everything and even use test light to see if everything has powers. No idea? Only other thing I can think of maybe is the brake pad switch but I replaced twice??? So, how can I check if the brake pad swich is good before I install it?

Recall info:

blubs changed, fuses good, tail light is good, turn signal is good, all area has powers(tested). So, with headlights on or off both back brake lights don't work just the middle but tail light works and is the same blub???Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
Use a bench tester to determine if the switch itself is good. It should show a circuit being closed when activated. Also check in your ground circuit to the brake lights they are usually grounded together and in some vehicles this circuit is separate from the turn signals. Also in a few vehicles there is an in-line fuse to the brake lights system, this is to avoid losing all tail lights during a failure of one system of the other. Electrical can be a head ache, as you undoubtedly know by now, but I wish you best of luck and you will find the problem. One other thing is does the vehicle have a wiring harness for a trailer? If so I would start by tracing it, I have found several shorts in this wiring harness and it will lead to problems which can stay masked. One I found was just pinched slightly between the hitch and frame but was enough to cause a short. Hope this helps ;)Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
Oh man you use your brakes..?Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
This is a confusing situation. You may have to take it to a mechanic. Sorry I couldn't help more.Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
check for power coming from the brake light switch into the turnsignal switch and then out of the turn signal switch. the third brake light bypasses the turn signal switchOk, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
Check the switch on the pedal with your test light. Make sure there is power to the switch. Have someone push the brake and make sure power goes through the switch, if not replace that switch. If it checks good, you may have a broken wire.Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
You probably put a single filament bulb in a double filament socket.

Check to see if you have a double filament bulb in place. It will have two silver boobs on the bottom.

Also clean the contacts and pull the contact tab up a little at the bottom of the socket. Sometimes the bulbs force them down too far so they don't make proper contact.

The simplest thing to do is to check if you have voltage at the socket contacts. Have a friend step on the brake pedal whlie you hold a voltmeter to each contact within the socket and to ground. If you get 12v voltage, everything is working perfectly. The only explanation is the bulb. If this is the case, then either:

A) The bulb is defective. Try another one.

B) You are putting the bulb in 180 degrees off. Match the side nipples to the socket properly.

C) You have the wrong bulb, or it is single filament (see above).

This is not rocket science. Power to the socket = a lit bulb.Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
You wont like this however:

IF things are as they seem to you there are only two possibilities that come to mind:

1) The brake switch - I know of no test for them other than to install them and see.

2) There is a wire in the system between the brakes and the lights that is partially frayed. When enough voltage is put through it - it shorts out. Unfortunately - you'll probaby need a mechanic for that second one. If the wire is cracked inside its casing - you'll never be able to see the bad wire as one.Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
You can test the brake switch with an ohm meter. Have someone hold the switch in the position it should be in to activate the lights, then check to see if they light. Maybe the switch is out of position.Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
you bulbs have two diferent wires going to it the turn signal is one and the brake is the other now if no brake lite but you have turnsignels try replacing the bulb it my look good but is not.Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
the only thing it sounds like you didnt check was to see if your ground has a good connection.some light testers wont help you there.you might have to look for it and make sure it is tight.its probably on the cars frame.follow the wires to the taillights and see if there is one wire that is bolted to the frame, and thats probably itOk, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
have you check the switch on brake pedal or have your brake fluid check on some cars there's an electric switch on master brake cylinder.Ok, I still can%26039;t solve my brake lights problem!!!?
Most likely you are going to have to replace the turn signal switch in the steering wheel, your brake lights work through your turn signal , you may want to also check to see that the hazard flashers are working if they are not, make sure the hazard flasher switch is turned off, because the brake lights will be canceled out if the switch is on, but if the hazards are working properly then the turn switch is most likely the problem if you are sure about the other components you have checked

My 2000 Dodge Neon oil was just changed and the check engine oil light stays on, how do I reset it?

How do you reset the oil light, it keeps coming on when I am slowing down, turning and at other random times. The dipstick reads Max and the lights been doing this since the last oil change. Do you apply the brakes a few times to reset it like with some other cars or is there another way?My 2000 Dodge Neon oil was just changed and the check engine oil light stays on, how do I reset it?
It has nothing to do with the oil change. The light is activated by either your car's ECM(electronic control module) because of information sent to it by one of your various engine sensors, or simply by reaching a predetermined milage. You will need your local Dodge Service Center on this one. Hope this helps.

2004 Nissan Maxima - ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights are on.?

I bought this car about a year ago 2004 Maxima SL. It only has 34000 Miles on it, About a month ago it started showing all of this lights, it use to happen only once in a while but now its everytime. The ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights come on when I start driving. The lights do not come on right away but rather when I start driving the car, First the SLIP light comes on and the transmission starts to slip but after all four lights come on, I can drive just fine without have to worry about transmission slipping... Now all of this started happening after I changed my Brake Pads and Balanced and Rotated the tires at a local Auto Shop. Can Anyone tell me what is wrong with the car or how can I reset all the warning lights? I would appreciate all the inputs...2004 Nissan Maxima - ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights are on.?
Problem happens right after brake service and tire rotate/balance?

The problem may be at wheel speed sensor(s). You really need to have a tech reading trouble code first then go from there.

Many shops will be able to read and reset engine, transmission, ABS trouble code with their scan tool.2004 Nissan Maxima - ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights are on.?
All of the above are Anti lock brake related items. You know acronyms SLIP= Traction Control VDC= Vehicle Dynamic Control AND ABS = antilock brakes. Now did any thing change a month ago when you maby put on two different size tires rims? Brake Systems problems need to be checked at the Nissan Dealer because the information is only available there to diagnosis and correctly repair the car. Just might be one bad wheel speed sensor. Or rodents chewing on the car's wiring. Get it looked at soon! good luck2004 Nissan Maxima - ABS, SLIP, VDC OFF and BRAKE lights are on.?
I recommend letting the Nissan dealer hook up the Consult scan tool.Could need reprogramming or there may be a real problem with a sensor or part...don't take chances with brakes.Good luck

For those who know about cars, Brake Light Problem, 1995 Nissan Sentra?

Ok, here's the problem. I have a 1995 Nissan Sentra. When I turn on the lights, all the lights turn on as they should. I have a problem with my brake lights and/or tail lights and I would like to know how to repair it. When I press on the brake, my right brake light turns on like it should while my left tail light/brake light turns completely off. Once I release the brake, both tail lights stay on as they should. So basically whenever I press down on the brake the two lights in the rear left side both turn off. I have tried the most basic thing I could think of, switching the bulbs and it didn't change anything. Someone with a little bit of car knowledge please let me know what's going on.For those who know about cars, Brake Light Problem, 1995 Nissan Sentra?
you have two filaments in those bulbs. one set is for running lights, the other is for brake lights.

obviously your right side lights are working 100%, left side, only the running lights are working.

bulbs are eliminated as you changed new ones in...and hopefully tested your old bulbs in the right hand side to confirm they do indeed light up...and as a result there is not a short in the system instantly blowing your brake filaments out on that side.

    after you do confirm that.

check your fuses to make sure you dont have separate fuses for left side brake lights and right side brake lights. if you dont, then you might want to check/replace your hazard light relay as the hazards use the high intensity brake lights...not the running lights to signal with.

after this I would think about swapping the brake light switch that is mounted up on the brake pedal under the dash.

after all this, you might want to see if a connector going to that brake assembly is unhooked or loose or corroded or has a burned out connection. you'll want to open the connectors and check inside them. sometimes simply unplugging the connector and plugging it back in will break the corrosion and give you good contact.

after that, I'd start checking grounds.

How do I fix the brake light on my '98 Stratus?

To give the history here... I learned my right tail light (inner brake light) was out. I checked the number of bulb I needed, bought it, and replaced it. Nothing: the light is still out. I messed around with it a little, switched the bulb for the brake light with the one for the turn signal (it had a different number on it; I wondered if the parts book gave me the wrong number), but still no tail light. And now no turn signal either! Frustrating.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking it might be the circuit board; when I was changing the bulb in the first place, it looked like no one had touched the tail light assembly in eons - the access to the bulb wouldn't turn, and I had to use a screwdriver to pry it loose. And I had to do the same thing with the turn signal bulb. So maybe I bollixed up the circuit board? The other two lights in the assembly work (the outer brake light and the backup light).

    Two questions here, really:

1 - Is the circuit board the most likely culprit. or if not what is?

2 - How difficult is it to change the circuit board myself? (Or to do whatever repair is necessary?)

Thank you!How do I fix the brake light on my %26039;98 Stratus?
Check the fuse first (the left and right stop lights are on different fuses for safety reasons).

Replace the bulbs as they were before - being different, the contacts do not mate.

1 - I hope not - even if it cracked, the conductor part, being thin and flexible, usually resists some time.

2 - depends on the car and your experience. Before doing it, check the board circuitry for continuity. It is usually fixed with self-tapping screws or similar fasteners to the body - apart the access, shouldn't be too difficult.

3 - before assembling everything, a drop or two of WD40 on socket contact may help. And don't touch the bulbs with bare hands, they last longer.

4 - while you're at it, check the ground connection, clean and WD40 as necessary.

With a bit of luck (and skinned knuckles) you might do it.How do I fix the brake light on my %26039;98 Stratus?
I'm thinking now you might have burnt something out when you switch a brake light with a signal light of a different number.

Signal lights, usually have two filaments and two connector buttons on the bottom.

Brake lights usually have one filament and one connector button.

When you interchanged them you shorted something out and hopefully you only blew the fuse.

Should have someone who knows what they are doing look at it.

How do I mend the right side brake light on my 2003 Ford Focus?

The tail lights work on both sides, but the right side brake light doesn't work. I've tried replacing the bulb, but that doesn't work. In fact, putting a new bulb in causes the tail light to stop working too. I put the old bulb back in and the tail light works again. Both the old and new bulbs are the same. Same part number, same voltage, same wattage.

I've checked the relevant fuse, and that's fine. I've replaced it just in case and no change.

Very confused as to why the new bulb stops the tail light working! Please help if you can.How do I mend the right side brake light on my 2003 Ford Focus?
Sounds like a dead earth problem, they are common of fords across the full range of cars. The connectors used to wire the lights are not very good and any moisture that enters the connector block will cause corrosion and dead shorts.

What you need to do is remove the connectors, clean the male parts with sand paper. The female half's need to be checked to make sure they are making a good connection and are not bent out of alignment.

How do I go about changing it out? My brake lights aren't working, I swapped them out, the fuses are good, so the only option is my brake switch. I just have no idea how to swap it out, or where the hell it is.Brake switch for a 1984 Thunderbird?
the brake light switch is up by the brake pedal. sometimes all they need is adjusted. if your going to change it then unhook the battery, unhook the plug-in on the switch and some of them screw out and you screw the new 1 in and adjust it so the brake lights work when you push the brake.Brake switch for a 1984 Thunderbird?
the brake light switch is up under the dash on top of your brake pedal, go to the parts store and get a new switch and then when you look on top of your brake pedal you will know what your looking for, a pretty simple installation but it's just awkward getting at it up under the dash with the front seat in place.

Can I control how my turn signals work on my ford focus?

    2003 Ford Focus Sedan LX

I had a problem with my signals and took it in to ford. they looked at a bunch of things and then traced it this metal box which which conected to the wiring harness that was put in along with my u haul hitch. Before they found that they put in new GEM module. I guess that conrols the turn signal amongst other things. Now when i brake the normal brake lights comes on along with the upper turn signal light. It should only light up one light (on the tail light) can i change that? or whats the deal. Can I control how my turn signals work on my ford focus?

I agree with Ford man.. disconnect the UHaul stuff first then try concern again... those trailer wiring harnesses give people like me fits in diagnosing and is one if the first things now I disable if working on a car like yours to verify concern.

Take it back to that shop. I believe there's a disc wear sensor on the front brakes. It wasn't installed properly.

My emergency brake is acting up, what could be the problem?

The car in question is a 2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R. About a week or so ago my rear left tire (or at least that is what it sounds like to me, but I guess it might be both back tires, not sure) started making a rubbing noise, like something was dragging on the wheel/drum somewhere. I of course assumed at first that it was the brake sensor telling me that I need to change my brakes (not sure if they are on the back brakes but it doesn't really matter). I then realized that that probably wasn't the case. The noise made no change at all, didn't stop or start or get louder or quieter, when I hit the brakes. Then all of the sudden one day, maybe a week ago, when I started my car, the e-brake light on the instrument panel was illuminated, but the e-brake lever was clearly not pulled. I tried pulling the lever and releasing it a couple times to see if it was stuck (which would be weird in it self, because I haven't pulled or used the e-brake for any reason in over a month) but no change. Now it definitely seems to be dragging the brake. When I am going 10 MPH or less I can feel it slowing the car down, any faster, and the sound subsides and it doesn't seem to affect it. A week ago, when it snowed a ton, I was driving through thick slush and seemed to be handling really bad, spinning out super easy. I opened my door and looked back while moving to see that the back left tire was just dragging in the slush, not even spinning, unless I got going faster (the other wheel could be doing this too, but I can see it while moving, and now the slush is gone. The noise seems to get worse then better then worse again. Is the cable broken? Stretched? Loose? The brake it self stuck? I would like to fix this myself, to save money, but I don't even know what to look for, really. I've never had to deal with any e-brake problems before. Any info on the possible problem and/or how to fix it would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks!!My emergency brake is acting up, what could be the problem?
Mr knowitall seems to have given a good answer to some one elses question. I think you have correctly diagnosed a sticking rear brake by observing it not turning in slush. The next step is to jack up the rear of the car and see if either or both rear wheels spin freely by hand without the e brake on. Assuming you verify that one or both are not spinning freely, Be sure you have a safety jack stand in place, remove the wheel and the brake drum. If you don't know how to do that, you probably also won't be able to proceed with the next step which is examining the brakes to find out if they are rusted in place or the e brake cable is holding them on. Given your apparent lack of experience, a better idea might be to take it to a muffler brake shop for one of their free brake check ups and have them tell you what is wrong and what they would charge you to fix it. And you do need to fix it, as you are wasting lots of gas and some hot day when you are driving at highway speeds the brakes will heat up enough to start on fire likely taking your car with them. Good luck.My emergency brake is acting up, what could be the problem?
    Replace your rear brakes.

Oh, check your master cylinder, I'll bet it's low on fluid.

    NEVER ADD BRAKE FLUID!!

The brake master cylinder is designed to hold just the right amount of brake fluid for your brake system.

There are two things to note.

    1) As the brake pads wear out, the calipers piston has to move farther out to press on the brake pads. As the piston moves farther out, the area behind the piston becomes filled with more fluid from the master cylinder, and the level of fluid in the master cylinder goes down.

When the fluid level in the master cylinder gets too low, a light should come on indicating that your brake fluid is low.

That does NOT mean you need to add brake fluid. It means your brake pads are VERY close to being worn out.

    2) If you add brake fluid today, and have your brakes done tomorrow, when the mechanic compresses the caliper piston ALL the excess brake fluid is going to spill out of the master cylinder all over the engine compartment and make a huge mess. Not to mention ruining your car.

Just a note: Brake fluid does not evaporate. So, unless you have a leak, NEVER add brake fluid.

Have your brakes serviced. My emergency brake is acting up, what could be the problem?
Jack the car up and pull the wheel. You should see the problem immediately. The hub could be ruined if the wheel is not turning. The e-brake could of come out of adjustment and is now hung up (past the point of no return). My chevy started to give me problems because the e-brake was out of adjustment. My emergency brake is acting up, what could be the problem?
It sounds like the parking brake is not releasing completely. This could be as a result of poor and/or lack of maintenance. Even though the hydraulic part of the braking system maybe working properly, the e-brake should be diagnose and fixed the right way.

My opinion is that the brake system is the most important system on any car. No matter how fast, loud, good paint job and all the many of like about cars, if it won't stop, the safety of the driver of such car, their passenger's other drivers and pedestrians will be compromised.

Have a professional inspected since it doesn't sound like this car was Winter-ready.

This may help you learn about this issue as well:

    Best wishes to you.

JMMy emergency brake is acting up, what could be the problem?
Quit writing stories about your car and take it in for the brake job it probably needed 2,000 miles ago. Now the pistons are sticking out of the calipers so far they are seized and you have metal to metal rubbing. The brake light is on because the brake fluid is so low from the caliper pistons being extended.

dont be cheap take it to a mechanicHow do I fix the brake lights on my Audi A6?
Honestly, just changing the bulbs could be a problem for you. We have special scan tools at the dealership that scan the whole system to make sure it's not more than a faulty bulb. A lot of the time the tools can detect improper wiring problems and other serious conditions. Best and safest bet is to get an appointment set up for your A6 at one of the dealerships. We do full scans, and that way you can find out if all your information is up to date, and if there are any 'silent recalls' you will have those fixed under warranty possibly. We often have recalls for software updates rather than real safety issues... this could also be what the A6 needs to help with the light problem...

    Brake Light Randomly Comes On?

I have a 2003 Mazada Protege 5. My brake light seems to come randomly, some days it's on for longer periods of time than others. Sometimes it comes on at a stop light and then stays on. Sometimes it comes on 30 seconds after I leave the stop light. Somedays I don't notice it on at all.

My actual brake pads are getting low, but are not to the point yet when they need to be changed. Also, overall from what I can tell, my brakes work just fine. They stop when I want them to stop and I don't feel them dragging when I go.

I think it might be a sensor problem. Anyone know how to fix this? Please don't say take it into the dealer, my family typically fixes cars all by themselves if at all possible. So, I just need to know how to fix the sensor. My husband keeps saying he will look into it, but hasn't yet. Maybe it is easy enough that I can do it myself.

Does anyone know the link to a website with specific instructions?

Thank You!Brake Light Randomly Comes On?
check the fluid reservoir,,it may be getting low on fluid,,,it has a sensor built in to detect if it gets low,,and this will cause the light to come on,,if it does appear to be full then it may be telling you there it to much pedal travel in your brake pedal,,this indicates a lot of wear,,and tear on your brakes,,and this wont go away until you do change the brakes,,good luck with it,,i hope this helps.Brake Light Randomly Comes On?
you might try,,checking the brake pads and shoes,,and see how wore down they are.

It is probably low brake fluid in the reservoir (sp). You said your brake pads are worn and the brake fluid you used to have in your reservoir is now in your lines. Fill up the reservoir and your light will stay out unless you have a leak.Brake Light Randomly Comes On?
Gee, I wish I could answer your question, but I too have the same problem! -- we both need to know !!Brake Light Randomly Comes On?
Look under brake peddle for little switchBrake Light Randomly Comes On?
Stop trying to figure if you need to fix. The light is on for a reason and you need to get the car into a shop. Don't wait. You might have brake pads but something is wrong. Sensors are for a reason and its a safety reason. Unless your will to gamble your life and someone Else on the road. Hope your are not.

Get to a shop asapBrake Light Randomly Comes On?
For starters, it may not be the sensor. You could have air in the lines, you could have a bad or failing master cylinder, brake booster, caliper...the list goes on. Or your pads are worse than you think.

I appreciate the fact that you would rather do it yourself, but unless you are really knowledgeable on brake systems, you will just be guessing and you could end up throwing good money after bad trying to treat the symptoms rather than the cause.

I'd take it to a brake specialist or dealer, if for no other reason than to have it diagnosed. Go to a place that gives free or cheap estimates. If you still are set on fixing it yourself you will at least know what to fix, rather than doing it by guess and by golly.

You can go to your local Auto Zone or similar place and they will have repair manuals specific to your type of car...also, they can hook up a trouble code reader for free to see if any sensors are reading bad, etc.

Another thing...being a 2003 model, aren't you still under warranty? The dealer could check things out to see if a covered part is the culprit. Warranties don't cover pads, but they do cover master cylinders, boosters, etc. Something to think about.

    Hope this helped.

Uninstalled factory radio and installed new radio. Now Dimmer light for car does not work...?

The car is a 97 Toyota Corolla

There is a white/green wire and a green wire not connected to anything behind the radio. The radio does not need a dimmer or illumination power. I believe these two wires deal with the dimmer or illumination. With the headlights on, 12 volts will show at these two wires. They look like they go to the dimmer switch. However, when you adjust the dimmer there is no voltage change and no lights come on that should (like the dashboard back light and such.) All other lights work (turn signals on dash, headlights, brake lights, etc).

Checked the fuses and all of them seem to be fine.

Not sure what steps to take now. Shouldnt the voltage for the white/green wire change when adjusting the dimmer knob? It doesnt. Help. It sucks driving at night with no dash lights. I have to go by how fast others are going to determine my speed.

Is there a way to test the dimmer switch itself, though I dont know why that wouldve stopped working.

First thing's first...check all the wiring and make sure that none of the wires are frayed or have any exposed strands that could possibly %26quot;ground out%26quot; to your metal sub-dash and pop fuses. Next...check all your fuses with a multimeter and not by eye. make sure that any unused wires are either terminated with a connector or taped off at their ends so they don't %26quot;ground out%26quot;. If none of these bear any fruit...you could've possible fried your dimmer switch and it needs replacement. You can usually tell if the dimmer switch is fried by smelling it...and if it smells kinda funky...it's probably shot. But before you spend money on replacing it (and it possibly not helping)...check everything else first!

How often do brake pads need to be changed?

I have a 96 Windstar. I bought it last month. I have maintainence records saying the front brake pads, calipers and rotors and back brake shoes, drums ect were replaced. That was three years ago at 108,000 miles. I bought it with 118,000 on it. Is it time to change them again? The brake light is on. My Step dad is going to do it this weekend I was just curious as to how often they should be changed, for future reference. Thank you.How often do brake pads need to be changed?
With only 10,000 miles on those brakes, this is not a normal condition. The Brake light coming on is an indication that your reservoir is low and has turned on the warning light. With the ABS also on, I suggest you have it looked at by a qualified technician. This is not a normal situation and it may be just a low fluid condition or numerous other possibilities.Typical brake life is around 25,000 to 30,000 miles of average driving with out any faults in the system. Good LuckHow often do brake pads need to be changed?
    brake light or ABS light?

if ABS then its something with the abs system be it wheel sensors, control computer, or abs unit.

brake pads tend to last average of 40k miles in normal driving, you ride your brakes or tow a lot or slam on your brakes a lot and they'll wear down a lot faster. How often do brake pads need to be changed?
well it all depends on how much u drive. u can tell by looking at the break pad and seeing how much is left on them u want no less then a half inch or else u could ruin ur rotorsHow often do brake pads need to be changed?
Have the system inspected. There should be no need to replace brakes after only 10K miles. If you have work done, do NOT take any parts to be machined at AutoZone. They are staffed by people who do not know %26quot;diddly%26quot; about cars. How often do brake pads need to be changed?
You remove the wheel, look at the pads, if there is only 1/8%26quot; or 3 mm left they need replacing.

to give you some idea where they are up to they are about 5/8%26quot; or 16 mm thick when new.

I just changed mine for the 1st time at 56000 miles. If yours need replacing after 10000, either you have something wrong with your set up and they are rubbing (using lots more fuel as well)

Or someone was telling lies!!!!!How often do brake pads need to be changed?
Well whenever you have your car serviced, varies with different cars, usually around 20k miles, you should check your brake pads/shoes for wear. If they seem fine and have no squeak or pull towards any side then they're okay :)How often do brake pads need to be changed?
Shouldn't I have 74 thou on my GMC and still have the same pads, have him check the master cylinder, as this can cause the light to come on, also ck to make sure the light does not say ABS as this is a totally different problem, and when he does look at the pads, make sure the calipers, which push the pads to the rotors are not sticking, and one other thing, have him take the rotors to autozone and have them machined and ck that they have not warped due to heat, something is abnormal, these are the things I would look at.How often do brake pads need to be changed?
they need to be changed every time they wear out or become cracked. How often do brake pads need to be changed?
There are many reasons brake pads last up to 80,000 miles and still others 10,000 miles. Vehicle weight, type of pads and where you do most of your driving enter into brake pad wear.

Usually a heavier vehicle wears pads and shoes faster than a light weight car. Slow in-town driving with a lot of stop and go driving wear brakes faster than over the road fast driving. Brake wear hinges on frequency of brake use. Ceramic brake pads last longer than organic or semi-metallic formulations.

You left out some important information: How many miles are on the odometer right this minute! You bought the car with 118,000 miles. It had 10,000 miles of brake use before you bought it. Do you see what I'me getting at?How often do brake pads need to be changed?
with both lights on I would say your low on brake fluid in the reservoir, brake pads only last as long as the person driving the vehicle, have them checked every 30,000 miles.

Why would the brake lights stay on?

The car is a 1998 Ford Escort and the brake lights stay on. Look under the dash , just off the brake pedal for a switch, see if

moisture and dust/dirt ( whatever ) is keeping it from springing back.

It could be the internal workings of the switch as well..

You may also want to check the connectors at the rear tail lights to

The brake lights don't work on my 2000 Jeep Cherokee.?

I checked every fuse, and replaced the light bulbs. however the brake lights still do not work. I read somewhere to change the brake switch on top of the brake pedal. I took a look and it looks like a white plastic box. If that is the solution how do I remove and change it??The brake lights don%26039;t work on my 2000 Jeep Cherokee.?
Before replacing more unnecessary parts, do a little testing with either a meter or a 12V test light.

Do you see 12V at the light socket terminals with the brake pedal is pushed? How about between the positive side and the chassis?

Do the other lights in the assembly work? (The tail lights and reverse lights.)

I don't have my manuals handy, but I can check later on the procedure for the switch. But in the mean time, check out some of the Jeep tech websites.

Must be in the wiring. Start at one end and follow it all the way through, you should find your problem. You may need to remove some plastics. If it all looks intact then just clean your joiners and see how you go then. A sparky has a tool that he can push into the wire and see if there is power going to it or not. You can buy one yourself, they are not expensive. Any auto-parts shop should have one.How to fix a brake light a turn signal on the?
The fact that it's only on the right side indicates to me that you have a problem with the wiring in the back only on the right side. The brake light and turn signal come through the same wire. Look underneath the right rear corner and see if you have a wire broken there. How to fix a brake light a turn signal on the?
Take a look at the trailer hitch wiring if it has one. There is splicing done at that connection that can corrode. How to fix a brake light a turn signal on the?
take the taillight assembly from the other side plug it in and see if it works on the the right side., if it doesn't you need to buy a test light and and start probing the taillight wires till you find where the wire is broken or pinch. If it does work when you switch the taillight assembly you need to replace the taillight sockets due to a bad connection .How to fix a brake light a turn signal on the?
did you check the wires going to the lights? How to fix a brake light a turn signal on the?
You have a bad turn signal switch. The turn and brake lights run through this switch. You have to pull the steering wheel to replace it. I'll bet the right side doesn't work with the 4-ways on either.

Do you brake for phantom cars?

I'm sure everyone that drives or has sat in the passenger seat has encountered these situations where they see the car in front of them *constantly* stopping. If the driver is learning how to drive/a new driver, then okei, that's understandable. Or if the driver is driving a standard car, that's understandable. And yeah, sometimes, they may be looking for a street or something but ergh ... what about all those OTHER times? I just figure there are other reasons.

What's worse though are those folks that brake at every intersection even with GREEN traffic lights. There are no flashing hands or anything to indicate that the light is going to change soon!

So! If you brake for phantom cars, please enlighten me as to why you do it. Thanks~!Do you brake for phantom cars?
some people are driving with vision problems like depth perception, optic neurtis (inflammation of optic nerve), near or far sighted or otherwise shouldn't be driving....and they are constantly breaking because they are misjudging the distance of the cars in front of them.

Some people with certain eye problems see halos (lighted areas around the vision ) and I think they see cars in front of them that aren't even there and brake for those too.

The best idea is simply to pass them. The road rage idea is to get in front of them and jam on the brakes a few times to teach them a lesson.Do you brake for phantom cars?
I understand your frustration I have no answers for why other people do this I only know when you are driving you have to watch out for other people because they are usually the ones to cause accidents.Do you brake for phantom cars?

    defensive driving.

If I am approaching an intersection and I see a vehicle coming that hasn't slowed for the signal/sign enough, yes, I will brake enough to be able to avoid them if they run the light.

I've seen so many people just go right through lights, I don't want to be t-boned.

I'd much rather be safe (even if I have the right of way) than to have a dead passenger because some bozo ran a light and I wasn't ready.Do you brake for phantom cars?

You never know if someone else is going to run their red light! It's still good look both ways and scan the intersection. I think though as people age their driving gets slower and slower and judgment is a thing of the past! LOLDo you brake for phantom cars?
I can understand how you feel for such drivers who are a

nuisance on the road. Remember, there are many kinds of

drivers on the road and the thing is to avoid such drivers if you

can. Don't follow them too closely and apply sudden brakes.

You either drive at a distance from them or when you have the

chance just overtake them quickly in the safe manner and

be on your way.Do you brake for phantom cars?

I have changed the bulbs on my brake lights but they are still not working, what could be the problem with them and how do you fix it?How to fix your brake lights?
I had a similar problem when my trailer blew out a fuse for my brake lights. Check the fuse, it might be burned out. If that's not the problem, then the switch under the brake pedal (the one that turns on the brake lights) might be faulty. If that is not a cure, then best to go see a mechanic.

Possible fuse problem with a 2003 Honda CRV?

My drivers side brake light went out a while ago and I just replaced it about two weeks ago. Now, I've come to find out that the drivers side brake light is constantly on, and my passenger's side brake light is now burned out. The only brake light that comes on at the right time is the center one in the middle of my back window.

Could this be a fuse problem (this is what my bf thinks), or what else would you suggest? If it is a fuse problem, how difficult is it to deal with myself? If the fuse blew you wouldn't have power to either. It sounds like you have a short in the wiring. I would have a Honda mechanic look at it. That is dangerous this time of year with inoperable brake lights.Possible fuse problem with a 2003 Honda CRV?

The law says you can not be in the intersection when the light turns red. How far he followed you is irrelevant.Failure to stop at a red light in VA how do I fight it?
Check your motorist handbook. You are required to stop when the light turns yellow. You are only allowed to enter the intersection on yellow if you are so close that you can not stop safely.

The timing of a yellow light is approximately 4 seconds in a 25 mph zone. A car travels about 1 1/2 feet per second, for every mile per hour of speed. Therefore, a car doing 25 mph is doing almost 40 feet per second. If the light was red at any time while you were in the intersection, that means it turned yellow while you were about 160 feet back.

It takes about 50 feet to stop a car going 25mph, so that leaves you over 100 feet for reaction time. That means there is plenty of time to stop.Failure to stop at a red light in VA how do I fight it?
The first thing you need to do is mark the %26quot;appeal%26quot; box on the moving violation ticket and mail the ticket and a letter to the appeals division. Do it immediately, otherwise you might wind up having to pay penalties ... and worse, it makes you look bad when you go to court.

... and that brings up the second thing you need to do: go to court. When you go, there's a small (very small) chance that the officer who wrote you the citation will not show up. If he doesn't, then the judge will throw out the case, and you will be home free (no court costs, no penalty, nothing left on your record).

If the officer does show up, then what you'll need to do is essentially plead your side of the story to the judge. Just say to the judge that you intended to stop, which is why you tapped your brakes, but you were already in the intersection, and there was a car right behind you, so you felt that it would be safer to go through the intersection rather than stop in the middle of it.

When you're making your case to the judge, be careful not to say anything that could be taken to be disrespectful to either the judge or the officer, and also be careful not to make any comments about the quality of the officer's judgments (or your opinions as to the lack thereof).

A couple of other things: It will help if you have a clean driving record, i.e. no history of moving violations. It will also help if you dress nicely. :-)

Good luck with the case. I know VA has some incredibly steep fines for moving violations (if you're a resident of VA).Failure to stop at a red light in VA how do I fight it?

Visit workshop.%26quot; then you need to take it to the dealer as soon as you can, but it's not that your brakes will fail on you, just don't take any trips with that car before having the dealer look at it. your car has what's it's called Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) brake system, where a microcomputer monitor's the car's and your actions, and it monitor's the brake pressure and applies stopping power when it sees neccessary. well the system didn't work as good as mercedes thought, there was a big recall on the cars with SBC, especially 2003-04 e-class. mercedes fixed it out of their pockets, and they still cover for the life of the car. but don't worry, it's not like the car's brakes will fail on you, there is also a back up hydrolic only braking system in place, so your brakes will still work even if SBC fails. so take the car to the dealer as soon as you can, drop your car there and they will give you a new mercedes as a loaner :), they will fix it for free since SBC brake problems mercedes will fix for free. if you dealer is a really small dealer and acts like they don't know about this, then call mbusa and they will contact your dealer and take care of it, so no worries. good luck.

now if it sad %26quot;brake lining wear%26quot;, then your brake pads are getting worn low, but you still have a good 1000 miles left on those pads (~300 miles if you drive in mountains with a lot of turns and braking). How long can u drive a 2003 Mercedes E320 after %26quot;brake service warning%26quot; goes on?
what turns the light on is the brake pad wear detector. If you know anything about cars you can

look at the pad thickness with the tire on.

It will save you allot of money in the long run to have them replaced, and not gamble on

messing up disc and rotors etc.

Have them checked the wear detector may not be set correctly and can be adjusted.

This can indicate a brake fluid pressure drop. Brake systems with anti-lock brakes can be touchy. EIther way, brake fluid must be changed very 3-4 years, or severe braking problems can result. Call your dealership and ASK them about this. Usually, they will examine your car for free since this can be a dangerous issue. Also, check your brake fluid level.

95 civic was originally an automatic but i converted it to manual trans. I changed the brake light switch then after checking my bulbs, the key wouldn't come out of the ignition. I don't know the wiring on that, but the key cylinder does not believe the car is in Park so it does not release the key.

You are driving to the grocery store at 20m/s. You are 110m from an intersection when the traffic light ?

turns red. Assume that your reaction time is 0.50s and that your car brakes with constant acceleration.

Q: How far are you from the intersection when you begin to apply the brakes?

Q: What acceleration will bring you to rest right at the intersection?

Q: How long does it take you to stop after the light changes?

You are driving to the grocery store at 20m/s. You are 110m from an intersection when the traffic light ?
In 1/2 second you are 100 m from the white line

    t = 100/((20-0)/2)=10 sec

    a=(0-20)/10 m/2^2

    = -2 m/s^2

    10 + 0.5 = 10.50 sec

My brake lights won't turn off,is my brake light switch bad, help?!?

I have an 01 Cavalier. My turning signal relay recently had to be changed. After I did that the brake lights came and have stayed on ever since. The only way to make them turn off is to pull the fuse. I believe it's the brake light switch, so how do I change it properly?

I have the new switch but the plastic part that it fits on in the bracket broke when I took the switch out. What is the best way to make my brake lights work right again? My brake lights won%26039;t turn off,is my brake light switch bad, help?!?
if the plastic holder in the bracket broke you need to get another one, then replace your brake light switch, the proper way to adjst it is to pull the pedal towards you then slide the switch into its holder and turn it clockwise, it should lock down. you can get the holder from your chevy dealer, it's possible that you knocked it out of adjustment when you replaced the flasherMy brake lights won%26039;t turn off,is my brake light switch bad, help?!?
if he lights are on all the time, it's most likely the switch needs to be adjusted. that can be done from under the dash. there is a nut and screw assembly behind the brake pedal, turn it one way or the other until the lights go off, then tighten the nut down and check to see if they are still on. if they are off then you are good to go, if they are on, then turn it some more once off then you should be OK. good luck ................ email me if you have any more questions. My brake lights won%26039;t turn off,is my brake light switch bad, help?!?

  • 2000 BMW 323i: How do I get the brake indicator lights to turn off?

I just had the brake pads on my 2000 BMW 323i changed, but the brake indicator/warning lights still turn on when I turn my car on. Does anyone know how to make them turn off?2000 BMW 323i: How do I get the brake indicator lights to turn off?
When you change out your pads, it is necessary to also change out the sensors (which is basically a metal contact with a cable attached; a $10 part. You need 2). They are typically fused to the old pad over time and if you tried to remove and reuse them, they would most likely break.

The sensor slots in to a groved cut-out on the brake pad. If the sensor is broken, it might fall out of that cut-out and touch the brake disc - triggering a false warning.

Your warning light could be either of these 3 things...

    - Your brake sensor is touching your disc due to improper installation or reuse of a broken sensor.

    - Your brake fluid is low.

    - Your parking brake switch has shorted.

Check all the above, if everything checks out ok, it is possible that the warning light stays latched for a while, and would go out on its own after a couple days.

If it still doesn't go out after a few days, go to your local AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts store and ask them to plug in an OBD2 reader to see if they can read/reset any fault code/s. They'll do this for free.

If that doesn't work, the last resort would be a drive to the dealer.2000 BMW 323i: How do I get the brake indicator lights to turn off?

Can I replace the brake light bulb on my audi a3 or do I need to take it to audi to do?

A brake light has gone on my audi a3 and I thought yep I'll just replace it but it's all panneled in. I have changed bulbs on Vw's with not hassle, just unclip the small panel and replace it but on the audi a3 it's all boxed in. How do I replace them? Can I replace the brake light bulb on my audi a3 or do I need to take it to audi to do?
To change the bulb you will need to remove the rear light cluster. Inside the boot you will see a round coloured (same as interior trim) Remove this and you will see a bolt that needs to be removed and the whole light fitting will be free to remove and then you can access the rear of the light like you could on the other cars. Be careful not to let the light drop when you undo the bolt and also not to Over tighten it when re fitting. Can I replace the brake light bulb on my audi a3 or do I need to take it to audi to do?
Its not to hard to do! Inside the boot behind the light cluster there is a blank plug that you need to pop out about the size of a 50p. In there you'll see a long plastic hex nut with a slot in it. It easier to use the screw driver in your spare wheel kit (probably designed for the job!). Unscrew this nut BE CAREFUL not to drop it in inside! You then need to hold the rear cluster by the inside edge (boot open) and pull it out a bit to clear the thread you have just removed the plastic nut from. Move the cluster outwards and sidewards which will pop the side of the light out of the side part of the bodywork. Its only held in by 2 plug style things in rubber gromets. The rest is simple, the bulbs are held on a circuit board like any other car in the back of the cluster. I would use phillips bulbs though, I put some cheap petrol station ones in and it kept blowing them! Hope this helps!

    Need to change brake pads?

I have an 08 Audi with 10k miles. When I brake from very slow speeds (%26lt;10mph) I often hear a light squeaking. This doesn't happen when I apply the brake at higher speeds, and my brakes haven't lost any power in their ability to brake. I've heard that if you only hear squeaking at low speeds you just need anti-squeak filters added... other people say I just need my brake pads changed. Which is more likely? How much should I expect to pay for brakes + labor?Need to change brake pads?
if you are not losing stopping power you should be fine. and you have a pretty new car also so i m pretty sure you don t need to change you pads. but if you were going to it would be less the 100 for a pair of pads. and its a pretty easy thing to do if you wanna try it yourself but labour is like 70$ an hr. hope this helpedNeed to change brake pads?
u probably got a nother 1,000 miles left but yeah u need brakesNeed to change brake pads?
It's more annoyance than a real problem.

Your dealership checks brake pad life on every service.

The noise may be due to the brakepad material, not that you're running out of brake pad.

I'd leave it alone, or bring it to the dealership.Need to change brake pads?
Its an Audi. Just like any other German made car, They go throught brake pads relaly fast which in turn they have very good braking (which im sure you've noticed). It might not be the pads yet so do the anti squeel first. Take the wheels off and look at the how much the pads have worn.Need to change brake pads?
You should get 30,000 to 40,000 miles before you need new brakes.

They're probably just dirty, oily from road grime during the rainy season.Need to change brake pads?
Any car that goes through brake pads in 10k miles is junk. I get 80k out of my brake pads %26amp; shoes. Cheap pads will squeak. If the pads are good, live with the problem. Just replacing pads is about $100 per axle.Need to change brake pads?
the brake pads are most likely glazed and causing the squeak. Your squeak is most likely your only problemNeed to change brake pads?
Ignore the squeak. New brake pads squeak. No problem at 10k miles.

91 Honda Civic Hatchback DX brake lights not working!?

OK. so. I have a 91 Civic DX hatchback. The tail lights come on when the headlights are turned on. Good.....but when I press the brakes, the lights dont change. when the high-beams are on, all the tail lights except the one in the spoiler come on. Still no brake lights. its not the bulbs, and its not a fuse. (under dash at least I have yet to check under the hood) HELP ME!!!!! how do I fix this?91 Honda Civic Hatchback DX brake lights not working!?
Find a good flashlight, and slide your driver's seat back. The switch for the brake lights is under the dash, mounted near your brake pedal assembly.

When you are not touching the brake pedal, the brake pedal assembly should be pressing on the switch. The peddle frame should leave the switch when you push the brake.

You have to find the switch, often very simple to do, sometimes they are hidden by all kinds of stuff. See if you can remove it, it needs to be tested with a continuity tester. Many hobbyist's have them and will be glad to check it for you. The switch is not expensive.

None of the above answers are correct. You have a problem with the ABS system, not with the brake pads. You will need to have the vehicle hooked to a diagnostic computer to read the diagnostic codes to properly diagnose the ABS system. Take it to a professional for help, and a proper diagnosis and repair.

How do change my brake switch...?

in a ford 89 tempo. everytime i drive at night and i hit the brakes my car stales and needs a jump to restart. i have a brand new alternator starter and battery. i think the brake switch is shorting everything else out because when i hit the brakes the lights dont go on, but once i tap a little wire next to the pedal with my other foot then the lights go on. also with this problem when the wire connects it makes a funny noise.i can only go about a mile or so before the car goes out and needs another jump. How do change my brake switch...?
This sounds like a strange problem. If a short in the braking circuit, it should blow a fuse. Also, a dead short in the wiring without a fuse would more likely result in the wire overheating and the car catching fire, rather than it disabling the electrical system. There are only two things I could think that is causing this. 1) A bad earth somewhere in the wiring is causing a large voltage drop, in the circuit wired in with the engine management computer. The computer will shut the engine down immediately.

    2) Another long shot possibility is that the brake booster is shot, and allowing air into the inlet manifold. The car would splutter and die, and the brakes would not work properly.

My money is on a faulty earth connections. Remove, clean and reconnect all earthing wiring from the negative post of the battery to the engine, and all wiring conencting to earthing points in the chassis. Your car is at an age where this problem is likely to happen. I had to do this on an 92 Corolla recentlyHow do change my brake switch...?

you brake light switch should cost around $10.00

they are pretty easy to replace, find the brake pedal and look up. it'll be under the dash.

what I would also do is do a very thorough inspection of the wires becasue it sounds like potentially someone was cutting and pasting wires under the dash at one point and didn't know what they were doing or looking at. the brake light switch simply turns the rear stop lights on, if you have cruise control, it disengages the cruise if on as well.

wouldn't surprise me if the ignition switch wires are banging around underneath and when you put your foot under the dash you are grounding out the wires to the ignition switch. How do change my brake switch...?
first of all , its an 89 , get rid of it . otherwise remove one of the battery cable, so you will not cause elecrical any shorts while you doing this little job. if you get down on the floor, and look under your brake pedel, you will see the swtch , up near the top , and behind the pedel. remove the wirring plug from the switch, remove the switch it self , then repeat the same process in putty the new swich in, after witch, you can put the battery cable back on , and tighen itHow do change my brake switch...?
THe switch is located behind the brake pedal below the pivot point. This means it's under the dash. To fix the wire, you can use electrician's tape if the insulator is cracked or the wire is exposed. You can get a replacement part from the dealer. How do change my brake switch...?
I don't think it's your switch, I think it's a more serious problem. Check the wires around the top of the brake pedal - it could be fouling some ignition wires and causing the car to switch off.How do change my brake switch...?
i think you need another car sweetie!!!!!

What is wrong with my car? Brake lights...?

When I put my foot on the clutch to change gears the brake lights come on!!! (Ford Mondeo Y plate...great condition apart from that.) And can it be fixed? How much will it cost? What is wrong with my car? Brake lights...?
I agree with RickRand. Have the pedal shaft inspected.

Had a similar prob with one car of mine, when I pressed the clutch and braked at the same time, the clutch pedal wouldn't come back up to engage the clutch unless I also released the brake. What is wrong with my car? Brake lights...?
My best guess is not a bad earth (the English version of the US %26quot;ground%26quot;) but some wear on the pivot shaft that the clutch and brake pedals probably both pivot on. When you press the clutch maybe it moves everything a little bit and the brake pedal moves slightly away from the brake light switch.

Stick your head in the footwell and see if there's any way to adjust the brake light switch position, but don't adjust it too far, otherwise the lights won't come on when you do brake.

If there's no way to adjust it, then maybe the pivot arrangement needs overhaul. At a very wild guess, 拢100 - 拢300 to overhaul. What is wrong with my car? Brake lights...?
Usually problems like this stem from a bad earth connection. Check that the bulbs are okay and not shorting out on something daft. Then check the earth connections (and possibly the fuses) on the various light clusters and under the bonnet to check that they are not corroded. What is wrong with my car? Brake lights...?
Do you mean the brake lights at the rear of car, or on the dash? If it's the actual brake lights, then it can only be the clutch pedal fouling the stop-light wire, get your head down and check wiring at pedal..(how do you know the brake lights are coming on?)What is wrong with my car? First check your brake light fuse!

The black wire should be grounded, have someone depress the brake pedal.with the tail light bulb out of socket, test both contact inside the socket.if you have your park light on ,both contacts should be energized.if only one works then you have to decide which one by eliminating the tail lights.

The most common response was that it is the solenoid. What is the solenoid and if this is the problem how can I fix it myself? Thanks for your help.Problem with 99 Daewoo Nubira not shifting out of park.?

I'm sure you already checked but I know alot of cars won't shift out of park unless you have your foot on the brake. Wouldn't you kick yourself in the butt if that's all it was?Problem with 99 Daewoo Nubira not shifting out of park.?
I would definitely take it to a repair shop. If it has a floor shifter, it might be the button on the shifter knob itself. The linkage to this button might be broken.Problem with 99 Daewoo Nubira not shifting out of park.?
sounds like your shift release solenoid . with ignition on foot on the brake pedal should allow you to shift out of park . some vehicles do have a manual override next to the shifter use something like your ign, key stick it in the whole and shift. you state you changed your brake light switch if it was only two wire then there should be another switch next to it ! chek for power using test light if no power check fuses.... good luck.

How can i reset the brake pad warning light on my new mini?

I have a 2004 Mini One D, the brake pad warning light came on so i have changed the pads. I have also fitted a new sensor as i damaged the old one replacing the pads. How can i reset the warning light that appears on the dash?

Also any idea what torque setting i need to tighten the wheels to?

ThanksHow can i reset the brake pad warning light on my new mini?
I'm looking at Alldata for that car, and do not see brake pad sensors in the schematics. However, if it does have them, where the sensor plugs in to the connector in the wheel well, there should be a voltage reading on one pin on the harness side. That voltage has to be present on the return wire for the light to go off. If the wire is cut or grounded to the rotor, the light will be on. You can unplug the sensors and attach jumpers across the two pins on the harness side to see if there is a problem with the sensors. BMW will sometimes put a sensor on one front wheel and one rear, but I'm not familiar with the Mini, it may have them on all four wheels. You can also check the sensors with an ohm meter. They should have continuity from one pin to the other, with no continuity to ground.

The lug nut torque is 120Nm, or 88.5 ft/lbs.How can i reset the brake pad warning light on my new mini?
i would contact the dealer and have them inspect it. not saying you installed the sensor wrong just saying those cars are tricky and anything could happen. try checking the fuse box in the hood. it might have a sensor reset button. i would just tighten the wheels evenly snug and go over one more time and go alittle more. my neighbor (not a car guy at all) tightened his nuts down to far and snapped one of. had to take it to the dealer and get it fixed. not sure how much it cost him though.

How to change the back brake taillight on a mid 90's Ford Taurus?

I have the bulb but the spot where it's at inside the trunk with the wires leading to the light seems to be stuck. The wires go into a black rubber thing that doesn't seem to move. How to change the back brake taillight on a mid 90%26039;s Ford Taurus?
Leave the wires alone. You have to pull the lens assembly loose from the body, after you remove the wing-nuts from the studs that hold it on, from inside the trunk.

Push the end of the rubber thing in and turn it.
